Explaining non small cell lung cancer in details

About NSCLC

It is shocking that lung cancer takes almost a million lives per year. Here are some details about lung cancer.

When we talk about non small cell lung cancer, we would find that it is the most common type of lung cancer. It covers up about 85% of lung cancer cases. About thirty per cent of those begin with formation of cell lining over the bronchioles and alveoli. Apart from this, another thirty per cent of cases begin with formation of cell lining in the respiratory tract. There are cases in which both non-small cell as well as small cell lung cancer cells are found. The unfortunate thing about these cases is that the tumors may grow to a significant size before any symptom is noticed.

Stages of NSCLC

Experts have divided cancer into four stages to determine the spread of cancer in your lungs. As you might be aware, stage I accounts to the lowest spread of cancer cells while stage IV is the extreme. In stage I, the cancer is discovered in the lungs and has not affected outside. While in stage II, it has affected the nearby lymph nodes. Coming up to stage III, the cancer has been discovered in the lymph nodes present in the middle of the chest and also the opposite side. While in stage IV, cancer is spread to both the lungs and also in other organs present as well.

Chances of survival

To elaborate, the symptoms must be noticed at an early stage before the cancer affects other areas. These types of cases have the best chance of survival. Studies have shown that almost 47% of cases in the first stage have managed to make it through. While in stage two, the number is 30%. The condition worsens as we enter stage three in which only 10% of cases have survived. In stage four, which is the worst stage of lung cancer, only one per cent managed to love through.
