Symptoms and DiagnosisIn a patient who is suffering from stage 1 NSCLC there may be no signs are symptoms are visible. When a doctor prescribed that patient for a chest X-ray that time only this cancer can be diagnosed. This lung cancer can be associated with another illness. There are some symptoms which include shortness of breath, a persistent cough that is smoker’s cough, recurrent bronchitis, wheezing, or pneumonia. Usually, in the early stage, there are no other symptoms are present in the patient.
Stages and TreatmentWithin the lungs, this stage 1 Non-small cell lung cancer is mainly localized and not spread to the lymph nodes. Sometimes there is a tumour that is 3 cm or less than that in diameter. Sometimes the size of the tumour is between 3 to 5 cm in diameter.
With a system that is known as TNM, that indicates T=tumour size, N=nodes, and M=metastasis, this stage can be described.
Usually for stage 1 lung cancer treatment surgery is the primary option. Via different techniques, the tumour is removed from the affected area. There are some techniques that can be used for this treatment; they are included lobectomy that means removal of the lobe from the lung, segmentectomy that means small segment removal of the lung, or pneumonectomy that means the entire lung removal.
If the location of the tumour is difficult to detect with the use of traditional surgery, then VATS (Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery) may be used.
For the treatment radiation therapy may be used if the cancer is recognized to be inoperable.
There is another treatment that is known as stereotactic body radiosurgery may be used for this treatment.
